mono motorcycles wiring & electrical expertise, Funtington, Chichester.

With our heads still reeling from the Goodwood Festival of Speed, it was back to another packed diary at mono motorcycles. Daniel Morris’ motorcycle wiring expertise was in great demand this week.

This week we have had the stunning Triumph Daytona 675R, Harley Davidson custom, Buell Ulysses, KTM 1050 Adventure, Honda CBF600 & have finished the week with a Yamaha  400 XS cafe racer & Yamaha Midnight Star.

The stunning Triumph Daytona 675R joined us on Tuesday for an interim service & engine management light switch off.

Our week started with Daniel dropping the engine out of the Buell Ulysses to access four sheered exhaust studs. Due to the nature of the Buell configuration (having the fuel tank built in to the frame & the oil in the swing arm) to access the the studs, the engine had to be dropped out & the studs manually drilled out & re-threaded. This, as can be imagined, is a very labour intensive task. However, once the studs were re-threaded & the exhaust re-fitted, the Buell fired up & was taken out on a considerable test ride.

The story of the Harley Davidson 883 custom. Having recently completed servicing works, fitting new lights, etc to the Harley, she was dutifully returned to her owner in late June. 100 miles later, her drive belt snapped! It happens, it’s all part of motorcycling.

A few weeks on, having sourced a new drive belt & rear brake light switch, an imperial 3/8 UNF, not a standard 883 addition & not readily available; the correct switch arrived three weeks after being ordered!

Once the switch was fitted, Daniel discovered some underlying wiring loom issues, the main one being that the loom was not a standard 883 loom.

Once the switch was fitted, Daniel discovered some underlying wiring loom issues, the main one being that the loom was not a standard 883 loom. However, after identifying that the loom was incorrectly wired to the back light, then that there was a break somewhere in the loom & through some extensive manual electrical wiring diagnostics (the Harley is too old for the TEXA software) Daniel managed to correct the issues & finally have the front & rear brake lights working independently of each other.

Sometimes when it comes to wiring, there are a lot of the traditional mechanical skills which have to be called upon, especially when the motorcycle is an older model.

Daniel’s expertise in wiring & electrical diagnostics, allows him to see faults in almost virtual reality, becoming part of the loom & chasing the faults through logical physical mathematical diagnosis.

Even with the TEXA diagnostic software as part of the mono motorcycles repertoire, it is Daniel’s knowledge of wiring that gives him the greater understanding & the skills to interpret the data he receives from the diagnostic & correct the issues as they arise.

The Honda CBF600 joined us for a new exhaust & timing chain tensioner. The exhaust was a pattern part from Black Widow & has made a great addition to the CBF. Not only does it look great, but the motorcycle can now perform better, due to the air loss from the blowing exhaust having been eradicated.

We have also taken receipt of a Yamaha 400 XS cafe racer with some considerable issues, the main one being no reliability due to a charging fault. Numerous components have already been changed out of the XS, but now she has bee brought to mono motorcycles for Daniel Morris’ attention. Watch this space!
